Artcicle: Is technology to blame for the London riots

Dunne & Raby: Park Interactives

In the 'park interactives' by dunne and raby, the objects belong to a society that actually encourages users to misbehave, changing the idea of what is deemed acceptable behaviour in a public area.

London riot areas: initial investigations

I visited 3 locations across London that were worst hit by the riots, Hackney, Croydon and Peckham. Although most of the physical damage has been cleaned up, walking around and collecting information on the various communities in each area allowed me to think about possible sites of intervention, geographical borders, what I really define a community to be, and what are the elements that make one.

Prototype iteration with white gaffa tape

By Re-modelling the riot helmet and giving it a different surface, altered its meaning completely and gave me new contexts in which to think about its use and users. Additionally the baton served as a new tool for possible games that could be created. If a riot could become something beneficial to both sides involved, could it become a social activity?

Studio Practice: Rapid Prototyping

I was asked to produce a 3D sketch of an artefact/ product/ piece of tech/ prop from within the territory I am investigating. But we were only allowed to use cardboard and gaffa tape. I chose a riot helmet:

Studio Practice: Questioning the Territory

As part of words week. We were asked to produce a question for our territory. My topic being 'Sports/ Game play and social relationships', my initial question was:

what parameters can be installed so a community can safely and efficiently design their own park?

And then this question was expanded on with questions from the question:

what objects are needed to transform a deprived play area?
what equipment would be most appropriate to enhance the experience of a play area?
how can we involve the whole family in a sports community project?
how can i measure the dynamics or certain, in order to design a site specific play area?
what rules are needed within the community to make a self sufficient plan work?
can food and sport help to promote each other and in turn help community spirit?
how can a 'sport makeover' be installed and documented, and then learnt from?
what would a social workshop involve, that promote sport and food?
how can we give youngsters a forum to be heard, rather than others speaking for them?
can we give youngsters responsibility/ ownership own their own park?
what technology can be used to give youngsters a voice into what they want in their space?
can a member of the public define these parameters?

This method of research has enabled me to throw up all sorts of dilemmas that need to be thought about and questioned during the design process. As well as thinking about interventions, people/ organisations to speak to and things to investigate.

Triolectique/ 3 sided football by Pied La Biche

3 teams, 3 goals, 1 pitch. The traditional rules are inverted, no set 2 sides, forever questioning your role on the pitch, no right or wrong. This mathematical conversion is intended to explode the traditional model of bourgeoise society.

"When we were leading the game, we did not know if we should pass the ball...we didnt know who to play with."

"The team does not play alone, and considers the opposing teams as potential mates."

Theorized in 'Triolectic Method in its Applications in General Society' by Asger John. Football used to tackle the emblematic example of the bipolar confrontation.

Soho Warriors Football Club

The team encompasses a handful of creative heads including artists/illustrators, designers, photographers, web designers, filmmakers. Unfortunately, aside from that there hasn’t been too much in the form of their recent outings as it’s still a relatively new start-up. The modern looking logo was done by Adrian Johnson.

...and I would love to get involved!

Little Kickers

All about Little Kickers, the company I work for as a coach.

"The real goal of Little Kickers, is to use football as a fun forum to instil our growing squad with a little extra confidence, co-ordination, control and sense of camaraderie; which we feel will stand them in very good stead for the future."

Freedom to Riot: On the Evolution of Collective Violence by Eric Michael Johnson

Great article questioning the nature of the recent riots across the world including London.

l'equip petit

L'equip petit or quite literally 'little team' is a great video about the kids of Margatania F.C. If you only ever watch one video about football, make it this.

Neville Gabie: Playing Away

Neville Gabie
Playing Away
Interview with Tate London

"The goal shall consist of two upright posts, eight yards apart [inside measurement] joined by a horizontal crossbar the lower edge of which shall be eight feet from the ground." -FIFA rulebook

Artist Statement:
Originally motivated by the sculptural qualities of some of the structures used as goalposts and the spaces where the game is played, this project has developed into an objective study of diverse cultural landscapes with a common obsession, football. Photographing the first of these goalposts I recognized something of what I was striving to achieve as an artist. Formally they explore sculptural concerns - the need to occupy a physical space, to stand up against the forces of gravity and the desire to be inventive with the use and assembly of all sorts of materials. Pictorially they are literally a window into vastly different contexts, intimately reflecting their immediate environment by using whatever material is readily available, to create these frames. And where space is limited, street corners or garage doors become substitute, with paint replacing construction as a means of marking out a territory. Common to all are the endless possibilities of reinvention within the constraints of creating an aperture marked by two verticals and one horizontal. It is "Dirty Minimalism" where the rules of what is or is not a goalpost are stretched to the very limits by the desire to play.

Craig Coultard: Forest Pitch

CRAIG COULTHARD’S Forest Pitch arts project will create a full-size football pitch hidden within a forest. Commercial trees felled to make space for the pitch will be used to create goalposts, a shelter and other infrastructure on site.

After the games, the site will be left to grow back naturally, with some native species replanted to encourage a more diverse environment. The shelter will remain as a simple documentation space and observation point, to witness the gradual reclamation of the pitch by the natural world.

This major commission aims to encourage debate about national identity, the natural world, sustainability, the nature of collective memory and the benefits of sporting participation. It will act as a small-scale mirror to the London 2012 Games.

Poolball: Mark II

The improved board has cushions doubled in height to improve the bounce, and improved pockets made from foam. As well as this we have raised the playing surface off of ground for a greater playing experience.

Too much free time...

Based on a recent Budweiser advert and having a bit of spare time on my hands before my work placement starts. Myself and my flatmate decided to build a 3.5m x 1.7m poolball table. The game still needs a few minor adjustments but we intent to improve it in the future.
